Buy Passes

All tickets for The COMET are available at the main downtown Transit Center at the corner of Sumter and Laurel Streets. Cash, checks and major credit/debit cards are accepted there.

You can also purchase passes using the Catch The COMET smartphone app.

There are several fare options available for The COMET fixed route bus service:

Fares:

  • Standard, one-way: $1.50
  • Special needs: $0.75 (with valid photo ID and special needs card)
  • Senior citizens: $0.75 (for those 65 and over with valid photo ID)
  • Medicare Recipients: $0.75 (Medicare Card & Photo ID)
  • Agency discount: $1.25 (please call 803-255-7133 for details)

Half-Fare Program:

Eligible persons may get  The COMET half-fare ID for free to use with half-fare passes including All-day, 5-day, 7-day, and 31-day cards.  Half-fare eligible passengers include veterans, seniors (65+), youth (ages 16 and 17), Medicare card holders, and persons with disabilities.  Appropriate documentation is required to receive The COMET half-fare ID.

Passes:

  • All-day pass: $3.00 (valid until service ends on the day it’s purchased)
  • 5-day pass: $12.00
  • 7-day pass: $14.00
  • 10-ride pass: $12.00
  • 31-day pass: $40.00
  • Children 5 and under: Free when accompanied by a paying adult

Single, 1-day, 10-ride and 31-day passes are available at the following Piggly Wiggly grocery store from the Customer Service counter. Piggly Wiggly accepts, cash, credit/debit and Greenbax.

Fare Details

Senior Citizens Fares

Individuals 65 years old and older are also eligible for a discounted fare. You need only show a valid form of identification that includes a date of birth when boarding a bus. In addition, all individuals bearing a valid Medicare card qualify for this discounted fare of $0.75.

Children

Children 5 years old or younger ride free, provided they are accompanied by a paying passenger. Children under 10 are not permitted to ride the COMET’s fixed route buses or DART services unless an adult accompanies them for the duration of their trip.

Multi-Ride and Multi-Day Passes

You can purchase 10-ride pass of multi-ride passes for 5, 7 or 31 days at the Transit Center, which is located at the corner of Sumter and Laurel Streets. Tickets are available Monday-Saturday from 7am until 7pm.

Passes can also be purchased from one local Piggly Wiggly grocery store, listed above.

Multi-Ride Passes are accepted on all COMET fixed bus routes. Please take care of your multi-ride pass(es). Lost, stolen or damaged passes cannot be replaced. Please do not bend passes and keep them away from magnets, water and extreme temperatures. We’ll give you protectors free of charge with the purchase of a pass.

10-Ride Pass

Pass is valid for 10 rides and expires after one year. The pass can be purchased at the Transit Center (with cash, check or a major credit/debit card) or on any COMET bus with cash. The Transit Center is located at the corner of Laurel and Sumter St. (1745 Sumter Street Columbia SC 29201). One local Piggly Wiggly store also sell passes. They accept cash, checks and credit/debit cards as well as Greenbax for payment.

All-Day Pass

Passes are valid for unlimited rides until service ends on the day it’s purchased.

Your pass must be validated the first time it is used. Just insert it into the transfer slot in the fare box. After initial use, simply swipe the card in the card reader.

Cards are encrypted with a “no share” feature and are not valid for more than one person.

Multi-Day Passes 

Each pass is valid for for the time indicated from the date of first use (not purchase) and expires at midnight on the final day.

Your pass must be validated the first time it is used. Just insert it into the transfer slot in the fare box. The date of initial use and the expiration date will be printed on the back of the pass.

After initial use, simply swipe the card in the card reader.

Cards are encrypted with a “no share” feature and are not valid for more than one person.

These passes gives you unlimited rides.
