Richland County, SC – The COMET announces major route changes in the Forest Drive Corridor effective Monday, January 15. 2018. The current Route 15: Forest Drive will become Route 701. This Route serves as a main connection artery that originates from the transit center on the corner of Sumter and Laurel Streets; and follows Taylor and Forest to the new Connection Protection Zone located on Little Road, around from the Walmart on Forest Drive. The Connection Protection Zone will serve as a mini-transit hub, which will provide a guaranteed transfer to feeder routes originating from this location. Those routes includes:
- Route 75: Decker/Parklane
- Route 76: Fort Jackson
- Route 77: Polo Rd.
This design helps to eliminate the need to travel to the transit center to transfer to other routes in that particular area. It also makes it easier to efficiently serve communities in and near the Ft. Jackson area. Safety was the primary concern when designing the Connection Protection Zone. The COMET Planning Director Samuel Scheib states that, “The situation with passengers running across Forest Drive to the bus stop on the north side of the street, is untenable. This change gets customers closer to the stores they are using like Walmart and promotes safety.” In addition to the Forest Drive Corridor, there is a minor change to the Route 46: Lower Richland Blvd that adds service to parts of Atlas Road and Greenlawn Drive.
